Thanksgiving Card

Recently at a Chamber lunch we had a guest speaker (unfortunately I do not remember her name.) She used a sports analogy that really changed my outlook on my business. In the last quarter teams don’t give up they keep pushing hard to win.

I was way behind in meeting my financial goal for the year. I only had a few short months left so I might as well throw in the towel. Right? My thinking went like this: After all it’s this bad economy. Everyone has cut back on their spending. Businesses are struggling to make it. Maybe next year I’ll do better. Maybe I am just kidding myself that I could ever leave my job behind and become a successful business owner. Stinking Thinking! It took me about a day to absorb and apply what she was saying during that Chamber lunch. I started pushing – pushing really hard, determined to “win.” This change in my thinking turned it around for me and now the game is going close – very close. This new outlook did more than close the gap of meeting my goal, it gave me momentum. This momentum will help to take my business to the next level. I have already started planning for next year. I have my goals in place and good start on my plan of action. To start the year off strong I know what I need to have completed by the end of this year. I have a lot to do to get ready for next year while pushing hard to finish this year strong. It is interesting how just a simple lunch could have such a big impact on my thinking and business. I’m excited now by what I have accomplished and the year ahead. I just need to play to win.

As a result of pushing hard to win, I decided to send out Thanksgiving cards with a thank you discount card. What better time of the year to say thank you to your family, friends, and clients. This is my first card that I fully designed and really enjoyed making it. The top part of the image is the front and the bottom is the back.

Standing Out From the Crowd

The other day while I was at a networking lunch I heard a great idea from Carol Haaz http://carolhaaz.com that is worth sharing. Instead of sending Christmas cards that will just get mixed in with all of the others send Thanksgiving ones. Your card will be remembered and will stay on display throughout the holiday season. As a business owner what a great time to say thank you and because so few people send out Thanksgiving cards yours will stand out from all of the others. Letting my family, friends, and clients know what a blessing they are in my life and how much I appreciate them is very exciting and Thanksgiving seems like the natural time to do so. As a photographer/artist I love fall photos and outside portraits can be a lot of fun especially with young children.

My web host/master Micah Kritzman from Websperations (http://websperations.com) is the perfect fit for me. I am sure if I had him completely design it my website would be better but I really love that he teaches me how to do it, helps me when I have a problem and fixes disasters when they occur. He also makes suggestions of what I can do to make it better. I think I might be a control freak but I have to have the control of my website so I can add photos, galleries, special offerings, and make the necessary changes I need when I want them. If I had to go to someone else for these things I would never make any changes to my site and it would just grow old. Micah is as much hands on as his clients want him to be but he encourages you to learn to manage it yourself. The best part I saved for last. He helped me escape from a web host I hated and …best of all I’m saving money.

Holiday Portraits

Does it seem early to think of the Holidays? For holiday portraits now is the time to start thinking about it. Photographers’ time slots fill up quickly, it takes time for processing, picking out just the right photo for your cards/gifts, delivery of your order, and then to send out your cards to your family and friends. You also might want to think about using your photos for gifts such as jewlery, desk items, mugs or calenders which adds in even more time. Maybe this year instead of sending out a family newsletter maybe it would be fun to send out a photo booklet. Also the closer we get to the holiday season the more crazy our lives get so by taking care of your holiday photos early means one less thing to do when the craziness hits.

Photo Classes and Workshop

I will be starting two new Photography classes in the San Fernando Valley. Also I have an upcoming workshop.

PHOTO PROCESSING: 50% of photography is capturing the images and 50% is processing the photo into a work of art. Learn how to polish your images using Lightroom and Photoshop. You will get hands on experience editing your photos and I will teach you the basics and the tricks of the pros. Classes starting Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 7 PM in Sylmar, CA.

BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY: The main emphasis for this course is portraits though it will include landscapes, action, and night photography. Bonnie will teach the the basics and openly share her knowledge of photography. You will get hands on experience taking photos with Bonnie there to help you with problems you are having and photo/composition ideas. Then you will post your photos and she will give you ideas of what could improve your work. It starts Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 3 PM.

Both courses includes 12 sessions, are an hour long and cost $40 each. If you pay in advance it is $400. Mention this blog and get a 25% discount. Generous group/family discounts are also available.

Photography Workshop to Alabama Hills

My scouting trip for adding a photography workshop to the Alabama Hills was very successful. It would be a fun place to take a group of people to hone in their photography skills. The participants would nor only have me there to teach the “how to” and pointers but would leave with some really good photos too. I feel like my photo courses are limited by not only the time we are together taking photos but by subject matter as well as the time of day that works out for most peoples schedules. Taking a trip completely dedicated to photography would be a wonderful solution. Also now I know the better time of the day for the Alabama Hills and could add in a trip up to the Mt. Whitney Portals. A Saturday and Sunday workshop would work but adding in a Friday or Monday would be nice. Because of the rattlesnakes and for the Sierras be be a more dramatic back drop late fall through early spring would be the best time of year to go.

Mono Lake

If photography is your hobby what could be more fun than getting away from the city for a weekend workshop. This weekend my husband, Tom and I are going to Lone Pine for a photo outing for just the two of us. I am thinking about leading some weekend photo workshop through Bonnie McDermott Photography. This weekend is about scouting out good locations, having fun in photography, and spending time with my husband. We have gone on a photo workshop lead by Keith Skelton and it was a lot of fun and we have wanted to do another one ever since. We decided we should just go out on one by ourselves. Now that I have added in photography classes into my business using both my love of photography and my 21 years of teaching experience why not add in workshops? Workshops will give me extended time with my students to help them hone in their skills and get some great photos. The workshops would be for a weekend in places like Lone Pine, Red Rock Canyon, Joshua Tree, and other locations surrounding the LA area. Maybe some day trips would be good to places like Vasquez Rocks, Malibu Beach, and other areas that are closer and could be done in a day. If you are interested in joining one of my workshops: where would you like to go? How much would you expect to pay? And other ideas you have.
